veteran cricketer Murali Vijay announced his retirement from all forms of international cricket. Vijay represented India in a total of 87 games, scoring 4490 points. The bulk of the opening hitter’s appearances came in the Test format, representing the national team in 61 games, scoring 3,982 runs at an average of 38.29. He also participated in 17 ODIs and 9 T20Is for the Indian team. In a heartwarming message on Twitter, Vijay confirmed that he was open to exploring new opportunities.
In an emotional post on social media, Vijay looked back on his career from 2002 to 2018 and thanked everyone who was part of his journey. He wrote:
“Today, with immense gratitude and humility, | announce my retirement from all forms of international cricket.
My journey from 2002 to 2018 was the most wonderful years of my life as it was an honor to represent India at the highest sporting level.
I am grateful for the opportunities given to me by Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA), Chennai Super Kings and Chemplast Sanmar.
To all my teammates, coaches, mentors and support staff: It was an absolute privilege to have played with all of you, and, | thank you all for helping to turn my dream into reality.
To the cricket fans who have supported me through the ups and downs of international sport, | will forever cherish the moments | spent with all of you and your support has always been a source of motivation for me.
Finally, | I would like to thank my family and friends for their unconditional love and support throughout my career. They have been my backbone and without them, | could not have achieved what | have today.
| am delighted to announce that | will explore new opportunities in the world of cricket and its business side, where | will also continue to participate in the sport that | love me and challenge me
in new and different environments. | think this is the next step in my journey as a cricketer and | I look forward to this new chapter in my life.
| wish all my former team mates and the Indian cricket team all the best for their future endeavours.
