Fans have ranked who they consider to be the dirtiest players in the game today. In some cases, it appears unpopularity saw them singled out while other stars were named and shamed for their brutal actions on the pitch.
#5. Owen Farrel (England)
Could it be someone else to start with? Farrell fits the “our guy” label better than most, which means you love to hate him unless he’s on your team. Then you would go to the end of the world to defend it.
The England captain, also known as the ‘Shoulder boy’ for his high tackle, is doing himself a disservice with his poor tackling technique.
Although he is currently serving a two-match ban, the fact that he often seems to get away with it doesn’t help either.
Facts about Owen Farrell:
The Saracens star went to school with England team-mate George Ford
His education began in rugby league – he joined Wigan St Patricks aged eight
He became the youngest player to appear in English professional rugby, making his debut aged 17 and 11 days. This record was later broken by his classmate Ford
It is well known that Owen is the son of Ireland head coach Andy Farrell. However, it is less well known that his uncle Sean O’Loughlin is also a rugby league legend, winning 34 caps for Great Britain between 1993 and 2009.
He was not originally registered as Farrell, but took mum Colleen’s surname, O’Loughlin. The couple married in 1995, changing the surname from Owen to Farrell the following year.
