Referees for the Sydney match filed criticism for three catches low to the ground in the slides at SCG. On each occasion, third referee Kettleborough found evidence that the ball had touched the ground before the defender could control it. Therefore, none of the captures were given.
“I don’t really know the answers but there has to be a way to try and improve it somehow,” Cummins said after the test against South Africa ended. by a draw. “As it is, it’s really hard to give a batter away. If there’s any benefit of the doubt, it’s going the batter’s way.
“I think with some really slow camera angles, it’s pretty hard not to find doubt somewhere. I feel a little Ketts up there.”
To make a decision, the third referee only has access to footage from the host broadcaster, Fox Sports, and not Seven Network cameras.
“Maybe there are more cameras we can use on the track,” Cummins said.
“The way the referees handled the three was pretty good. I think it was brilliant,” he said. “Once you set the bar with the first one, you can’t really move from there.
“These things are always going to be a gray area, some guys will say, some guys won’t. Ultimately their decision is final and as players we respect that.”
