Sensational juggled out-of-bounds hold secures Brisbane Heat’s BBL win over Sixers

Michael Neser pulled off a sensational and controversial hold to secure the Brisbane Heat’s 15-point victory over the Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League at the Gabba on Sunday evening.

Neser caught Jordan Silk (41 on 23 balls) in the 19th, but only after hitting the ball in the air while behind the boundary line.

Neser reached the ball just inside the boundary rope, but couldn’t complete the catch without getting behind, so threw the ball in the air, went out of bounds, jumped for Toss the ball once more in the air, then finished catching it inside the boundary rope.

Outrageous take by Michael Neser ?

Let Glenn Maxwell explain why it’s a legit take #BBL12 pic.twitter.com/7YORTIUFat

Commenting on Seven, Australia international Glenn Maxwell explained why the take was legit.

“It came out…so much so that when he threw it the second time, his feet were in the air.

“Indeed, he could throw it 300 times as long as his feet were in the air.”

Neser told 7Cricket: “I knew [Matt] Renshaw did that a few years ago. I didn’t know if they had changed the rules, so I thought I’d give it a try. Luckily, they didn’t change the rules.

Some fans on social media argued that while the trap was within the rules, the rule was unfair.

Exceptional conscientiousness and composure of Michael Neser. And under the laws of the game. But that clearly shouldn’t be taken out under the rules of the game. Once a player is pinned to the ground outside the playing court, he must be out of the game. #BBL12

I absolutely hate this tendency for outfield players to be able to return the ball and catch it, but doing it twice is real shit. Great effort from Neser but how can this happen?

The ICC must change the rules. If both the ball and the player go over the boundary line, it’s a six. https://t.co/9kS1Ohae7k

Re Neser catch: Even though it’s within IMO laws, you shouldn’t be able to jump again outside the playing field. Similarly, you can’t jump from outside the playing field to start.

Agree disagree? @abcsport

The Sixers made a gallant response in their pursuit of a BBL record run, but failed to be all out of the final delivery for 209.

Capturing Neser to fire Sixers skipper Silk was the defining moment of the chase after also going 3-41 with the ball.

Silk and allrounder Hayden Kerr (27) added 54 for 26 for the sixth wicket, but Kerr was brilliantly baffled by spinner Matt Kuhnemann’s Jimmy Peirson (2-31).

Earlier, Josh Brown produced his lightning innings to score 62 on just 23 balls in the Heat’s 5-224 in front of 23,689 fans.

He raised his fifty in just 19 deliveries, the fifth-fastest tie in Heat history in just his second BBL game.
