Race to Lingfield this afternoon was abandoned following a second inspection.
With high-profile jump meetings at Ascot and Haydock already held, as well as other National Hunt cards at Newcastle and Fairyhouse, Lingfield’s all-weather match was to be the main attraction.
Temperatures have dropped to minus 8C at the Surrey circuit this week, and while race director George Hill declared the track passable on Friday, he announced a preventive inspection at 7.30am.
This revealed a frozen area at the edge of the racing line and with this in mind a further check took place at 9.30am.
But despite the best attempts by Hill and his team, the temperatures did not rise fast enough and were still minus 5°C when the decision was made to retire.
It will be a blank race day after Chelmsford retired. The course reported temperatures not rising significantly and frozen chunks on the track not thawing in time after minus 9C and freezing fog overnight.
With conditions softening, there is confidence racing will resume on Sunday, with an all-weather meeting scheduled for Wolverhampton.
Ireland is set to hold jump maps at Navan and Thurles. A precautionary inspection at 7.30am has been called at the latter site, but temperatures are expected to reach double figures on Sunday.
Navan will be watching at 8am with the track still frozen in places on Saturday afternoon. However, the forecasts are favourable.
