Mehmeti plays as Wycombe beat Portsmouth

Albanian Anis Mehmeti is Wycombe’s top scorer this season with eight Ligue 1 goals

Wycombe Wanderers spoke on the pitch as they beat top-flight Portsmouth to climb into the top 10 of League One.

On a day when on-field audio, locker room cameras and mid-game manager interviews were top of the pre-match agendaAlbanian midfielder Anis Mehmeti was the star of the show, scoring the first goal and netting the second for Garath McCleary.

It gave Gareth Ainsworth’s Chairboys a second win in three games to lift them to 10th place, less than a point behind Pompey, eighth from Danny Cowley, who suffered only his third defeat of the season .

Wycombe was ahead on 14 minutes when David Wheeler reacted well to win his own knockdown from a hopeful long punt, Brandon Hanlan moved him to the side and Mehmeti was unmarked on the edge from the 18-yard box to bend home a fine first-hand right-footed shot into the top right corner.

Mehmeti then missed an even better chance and it could have been 2-0 on 40 minutes when Alfie Mawson found himself in space inside Pompey’s penalty area, but his 15-yard half-volley superbly struck came back inside the right post. .

Pompey, who has now won just one of his last league games, had chances to equalize after the break.

Dane Scarlett’s fiendish effort was blocked by Max Stryjek’s chest, substitute Reeco Hackett’s right-footed shot was brilliantly deflected by the Polish keeper at his near post – and he then saved Scarlett’s header at the post close.

But, despite loud cheers from Pompey’s always-magnificent away support, it was the hosts who finished stronger.

Welsh international Sam Vokes’ shrewd flick of Jack Grimmer’s superb low right wing cross was prevented by the sharp reflexes on the line from Pompey keeper Josh Griffiths, who then saved from Lewis Wing.

But it was all settled when Mehmeti’s trickery took him into Pompey’s penalty area on the right and, after showing he could access all the right areas of the pitch, he kept his composure to that McCleary scores his fourth goal of the season – and second in three games.
