The Black Cats took the lead in the first half when Amad set up Ellis Simms to score in the 25th minute.
Birmingham saw more ball but fell behind when Amad scored an excellent second for the Black Cats, converting in front of the traveling fans.
Substitute Lukas Jutkiewicz then pulled a goal back for Birmingham 12 minutes from time but Sunderland managed to hold on.
Our Sunderland writer Phil Smith handed out his St Andrew’s player ratings:
1.Anthony Patterson – 8
He couldn’t do much about the goal and made two brilliant blocks at important points in the game. It was crucial for the end result. 8

2. Trai Hume – 8
Dominated in the air in the first half and made big defensive interventions in the second half, including a big block on the line. A truly mature performance that staked out a big claim after the break. 8

3. Bailey Wright – 5
Struggled tenaciously against a strong forward line but will be frustrated that his missed clearance got Birmingham back in the game. Defended his box well after that. 5

4. Danny Bath – 7
Pulled out of position once or twice in the first half but made some really big clearances late in the game that were crucial for the win. seven
