In discussions of cricket’s greatest hitters, the name of Shahid Afridi inevitably falls. The former Pakistani all-rounder’s strength in hitting big shots was natural. As shown in a recent story told by Waqar Younis.
Speaking on A Sports, the former Pakistani was quick to share: “When he arrived on the scene he was only 15-16 years old. And a very strong 15-16 year old. When I first shook his hand… he made you sweat because he was squeezing it too hard. That’s why I think he used to hit those big sixes.
“Haan wo haath hi todd deta tha yaar (he would break your hands),” Wasim Akram said in the chat.
Waqar added, “We were on tour in India. I remember the name of one of the ministers but I will not retain the name. He came to greet us and we were all seated, so when he came we got up. He met everyone, his entire delegation had come. Afridi being then a junior, stood at the end to meet him. Everyone was gently shaking his hand, since he was an elderly pastor. Afridi told me “look”.
“He got out of breath,” Akram said with a chuckle.
Waqar then stood up and acted out the minister’s reaction to Afridi shaking his hand as he bent down with his hand on the table, visibly in pain.
