John Leek Jr says associating with Bob Peters is life changing
There is no shortage of excitement and enthusiasm around John Leek Jr and his stable.
The Pakenham coach says he can’t help but be thrilled after being sent off another starring group by Perth main owner Bob Peters.
By his own admission, in the later stages of his coaching career, Leek Jr was rejuvenated by an influx of star power and he dares to dream big.
Peters traded Zaratite and Picture Perfect to Leek Jr last month, but the addition of Group 1 champions Regal Power and Western Empire is an unexpected boost one he is desperate to maximize.
Regal Power and Western Empire were stars at Ascot last year after winning the Kingston City Classic and Railway issues respectively, but came home after being beaten well in two Melbourne Spring Carnival events for coach, Danny O’Brien.
Leek Jr said the affair with Peters was life changing.
“I’ve had a few changes in my life, but this opportunity is quite amazing,” Leek Jr told RSN Melbourne.
“They are serious, serious horses and to be honest, Bob Peters has changed our lives right now.
“I’ve had good horses over the years but nothing of this type of quality, these horses are just amazing.
“It’s probably the most exciting race of my life.
“It will be interesting to see what they do because they have some serious abilities.”
Leek Jr said Western Empire and Regal Power will be targeting Melbourne’s Autumn Carnival next year.
The All Star Milea race won by Regal Power two years ago and The australian cup are prime targets.
“Bob likes to make a plan for his horses,” said Leek Jr.
“He’s had success over the years and you have to take your hat off to a guy who’s done that.
“We chat almost daily and I keep him updated on every horse, he feels like he’s in the stable with us.
“I’ve basically moved all the other horses I have with the exception of Fengarada, who I will personally take care of.
“I don’t want a horse interfering with what I’m doing with his horses.
“I have time to do it and I hope the next 12 months will be great.
“I still pinch myself to have these horses in my stables.”
Fengarada has won four of the five races this campaign for Leek Jr, including the Moe Cup (2050m) on October 14.
Bright Diamond, Secret Plan, Frigid and Truly Blessed are the other horses owned by Peters who have transferred to Leek Jr.
