If Red Bull is hit with a hefty penalty, the Constructors’ Championship leaders can’t say they haven’t been warned.
In 2019, when drawing up plans to implement the cost cap in time for 2022, F1 technical director and chief executive Ross Brawn warned teams they risk losing their grip on the championship if they were found to have violated the rules.
“Financial regulation is the sea change in F1,” Brawn said in the official reveal at an FIA press conference in Austin, Texas.
“We’ve tried these in the past, and we haven’t been successful. I think the crucial thing about the financial regulations now is that they are part of the FIA regulations. Thus, the sanctions for violation of financial regulations will be sporting sanctions, depending on the seriousness of the violation.
“Whereas before we had the resource restriction, which was a gentlemen’s agreement between the teams – well, there aren’t many gentlemen in the paddock, I’m afraid, and it was a failure.
“But it has bite. If you fraudulently violate the financial regulations, you will lose your championship. So there are serious consequences if teams violate these regulations.
