There has been much speculation and debate over Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy call by the Stipes to uphold Richard Fourie’s objection.

The Sports position was inundated with calls – did the Stipes do the right thing after Calvin Habib, who never touched the crop, came from last on Han Solo and brushed Somerset Maugham, but to win anyway leaving?
A contestant rider in second, Richard Fourie breached the harvest rules limit of 12 in front of a largely novice crowd, but still prevailed. What message does this send – races don’t care about horses and their own rules?

THE STARTER REPORTED:
- a) BARATHEON (JP van der Merwe) kicked the back gates of the starting stalls, caught his leg in the back gates, was taken out, examined by the course vet and retired.
SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS REPORTED:
- a) The start of this race has been delayed due to the late withdrawal of BARATHEON (JP van der Merwe) (Bets 3/1) and to allow the betting public to restructure their bets.
- b) In the 100m, SOMERSET MAUGHAM (R Fourie) changed stride and became momentarily off balance when he was pushed inward by HAN SOLO (C Habib), who clung and staggered. After being straightened, HAN SOLO (C Habib) continued to shift slightly and brushed SOMERSET MAUGHAM (R Fourie) shortly before the finish. Trainer SJ Snaith called a race review regarding this incident, which was followed by an objection filed by Jockey R Fourie, the rider of the 2n/a horse placed SOMERSET MAUGHAM against the winner HAN SOLO (C Habib) for interference in the last stages. The Opposition Board, having given due consideration to the evidence presented, reviewed the patrol films and considered the 0.05 length margin between the two horses involved, found that, but for the interference, SOMERSET MAUGHAM would have finished ahead of HAN SOLO if this incident had not happened and therefore upheld the objection. Jockey Fourie’s bail has been refunded.
- c) Jockey L Tarentaal reported that he sensed something was wrong with PACK LEADER and did not persevere in his riding from the 300m. The vet was asked to examine this gelding.
- d) In view of the starter’s report regarding BARATHEON (JP van der Merwe), PAW Trainer Botha will be advised to re-educate this gelding before his next entry in accordance with rule 61.6.10.
- e) Jockey R Fourie was charged with a breach of Rule 58.10.2 (read with Directive M on the use of the riding crop) in that he misused his riding crop by hitting SOMERSET MAUGHAM over 12 times throughout the race. Jockey R Fourie signed an admission of guilt and was fined R2500.00. In determining the penalty, the Council took into account the distance covered and the way in which Jockey R Fourie used his harvest, the recent record of Jockey R Fourie, the number of strikes (14) above the authorized level and the value of the race.
- f) HAN SOLO, ranked second on objection, was selected for the collection of samples for analysis. Coach GS Kotzen has been notified. (RS)
- g) SOMERSET MAUGHAM, the winner on objection, was selected for the collection of samples for analysis. Coach SJ Snaith has been notified. (JT)
