St Helens’ Morgan Knowles will feature in Saturday’s grand final after the club won a second appeal against the two-match ban he received following their semi-final.

Knowles was convicted in the Saints’ 19-12 semi-final win over Salford for twisting Chris Atkin’s arm, and his conduct was ruled Grade B dangerous contact with an opponent.

On Tuesday, the Independent Tribunal upheld the match review committee’s decision and also imposed a £500 fine.

But the RFL said on Wednesday: “After the Independent Tribunal on Tuesday dismissed its first appeal, St Helens launched a second appeal claiming the tribunal’s finding was ‘unreasonable’ on the evidence presented.

“Tonight’s court accepted that although there was some twisting to apply pressure to an opposing player’s limb, it did not exceed the normal range of motion and therefore would not have could have posed an ‘unacceptable risk of injury’.”

The result is a natural boost for the defending champions as they seek an unprecedented fourth straight Grand Final win.

He will also be welcomed by England manager Shaun Wane, who seems certain to include the former Wales international in his 24-man World Cup squad.
