Ralph Boschung will be back on the Formula 2 entry list this weekend, as the injured driver returns to the Campos Racing team at Spa-Francorchamps.
A neck injury that Boschung picked up early in the season led to him being retired three sets mid-weekend. He managed to qualify twice and on one occasion was only able to run in practice before retiring.
Boschung suffers from severe facet syndrome, a degenerative arthritis-like condition that affects the bones in the upper part of his spine.
As a result, he missed the last three race weekends. Roberto Merhi took his place in the last rounds, but the former Formula 1 driver is due to compete in a Super GT race in Japan this weekend.
Campos has already signed up another replacement driver, Lirim Zendeli, to replace Boschung’s teammate Olli Caldwell, who is serving a ban this weekend. As a result, Boschung will attempt another comeback.
“It’s good to be back,” he said. “It’s been the most difficult moments of my career lately, but I’m happy to be able to try to race again at Spa.”
There remains a possibility that Boschung could again be forced to withdraw in the middle of the event if he suffers too much neck pain.
“Of course I will know once I drive how the neck will react, so I will remain cautiously optimistic,” he continued. “Campos Racing deserves great results as we have shown [at the] start of the season so I will do my best to achieve this.
Boschung took the cross-country podium at Imola and Merhi came close to winning on his return to F2 in the cross-country race at the Red Bull Ring. Although both drivers have only raced part-time this year, they are both above Caldwell in the standings as the rookie has only scored once.
