Andrea Atzeni celebrating after winning on Stradivarius

Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup: Stradivarius line up at York but Team Trueshan watch the weather

Three-time Ascot Gold Cup winner Stradivarius will look for another major racing success on Friday, facing seven opponents in the Weatherbys Hamilton Lonsdale Cup at York.

Andrea Atzeni continues the partnership with the ensemble formed by John and Thady Gosden, who are unbeaten in six starts in York, including three renewals of this group two competition.

As Trueshan, multiple Group 1 winner of Alan King, is declared, the manager is hoping for more rain before signing him.

“He won’t race as things stand. But it’s raining on Thursday evening.

“We don’t know how much, but I’d look awfully stupid if it got good to soft,” King said.

Andrew Balding’s stayer Coltrane joins stablemate Nate The Great, while Quickthorn is on a hat-trick for Hughie Morrison following Group 2 success in France last month.

The unbeaten Royal Acclaim will face 14 rivals in the Group One Coolmore Wootton Bassett Nunthorpe Stakes in York on Friday.

The James Tate-trained daughter of Acclaim won the City Walls over the five furlong course and distance last month.

This brings his winning streak to three and will now make his debut at the highest level.

The three-year-old leads the market for the race’s only juvenile, The Platinum Queen – which won three of four for Richard Fahey.

A course and distance winner herself, she is drawn 13 out of 15 runners, with Royal Acclaim on the other wing in stall two.

The highly experienced sprinter Highfield Princess is aiming for an 11th career success after winning three of her last four, including victory in the Group One Prix Maurice de Gheest in her previous start for John Quinn.

However, like York Summer Stakes scorer Flotus (Simon and Ed Crisford), she has only run once before on the minimum trip.

Winter Power (Tim Easterby) hasn’t scored since winning that race last year against Emaraaty Ana (Kevin Ryan), who will try to do better this time around. Meanwhile, Goodwood’s Group 2 home front two King George, Khaadem (Charlie Hills) and Raasel (Mick Appleby) lock the horns again.

The Group Two Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Gimcrack Stakes drew 12 riders, with Appleby’s Noble Style, Karl Burke’s Marshman and Fahey’s Clearpoint all unbeaten in the six-stage contest.

Goodwood’s two-time goalscorer Royal Scotsman (Paul and Oliver Cole) will also have his supporters in what promises to be a major revival.
