‘Dinesh Karthik can sit next to me as a commentator. I won’t choose him in the Indian team’: Jadeja’s brave statement

India is two months away from traveling to Australia for the T20 World Cup 2022. And as the audition for a spot in the final 15 continues for all but a few names, veterans and pundits continued to offer their thoughts on how the team should look and who should be on it. Ancient India cricketer Ajay Jadeja has joined the bandwagon. And while he didn’t choose the team as certain, he did hint at what he thinks the Indian squad should look like for the big tournament.

Speaking to Fan Code ahead of the start of the fifth and final T20I game between India and West Indies in Florida on Sunday, Jadeja picked out his bowling attack which included three point guards and a spinner. He notably picked Mohammed Shami, who hasn’t played a single T20I game for India since the last World Cup and dropped Bhuvneshwar Kumar, who was the highest wicket taker for India during the period.

“I added Shami to the team. So for me, I select the bowlers first. So Shami is a certainty. Bumrah, Arshdeep and Chahal. These are the four certainties. At bat, four are certainties for me: Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda. For this bowling attack, you have the power play, middle overs, and death overs sorted. You can play them anywhere. Even for the hitters, they are flexible,” he said.

India have changed their batting approach to T20I cricket. From a conservative approach, India, under Rohit Sharma, adopted an aggressive brand of cricket. Highlighting India’s new batting strategy, Jadeja felt that if they stick with it, former India captain Kohli could be left out. However, he explained that if India go the MS Dhoni way, the selectors will keep Kohli and then have to pick Dinesh Karthik in the XI as well.

“Now if you want to play like I heard them…aggressive, you have to choose differently. If Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma come in, you need Dinesh Karthik at all costs. He’s your insurance. But if you don’t you don’t have either, so Dinesh Karthik has no job here. But yeah I wouldn’t put Karthik there, he can sit next to me. He’s very good as a commentator. But there, in the team, I wouldn’t choose him. Now the decision is whether you want to play Ravindra or Axar. If it’s Dhoni style, add Kohli, Rohit and Karthik. But in modern cricket, you have to leave aside Karthik. Maybe even Kohli depends on whether he’s fit or not. He explained.
