Many in Australia’s cricketing community were quick to congratulate the newlyweds. NSW star Baxter Holt commented on Lyon’s post: “Happiness is an understatement!! So happy for you two!!”

Former Australian bowler Trent Copeland wrote “congratulations lovers”, Alex Carey said “beautiful mate, congratulations guys” while his Lyon team-mate Mitch Swepson added: “Yes Gazza! Congratulations to you two.”

Australian T20 star Chris Green chimed in with the obligatory ‘Nice Garry’, adding a GOAT emoji in reference to Lyon’s nickname.

Lyon and McCarthy started dating in 2017, with their relationship going public when they were spotted kissing in Perth. In 2020, they bought their first home together, spending a $3.8 million townhouse at Tennyson Point in Sydney.

Rumors emerged last year that the couple were engaged. There was speculation that McCarthy was rocking an engagement ring after she was spotted wearing bling on her finger during the fourth Test against India at the Gabba, and she posted about her search for a wedding dress on Instagram.

Lyon paid tribute to McCarthy for helping him out of a hole during the 2019 Asheswhen he missed a run-out that saw the Aussies lose the third Test at Leeds.

“Making a mistake just proves we are human (but) it was quite difficult,” Lyon told cricket.com.au at the time.

“I was lucky to have Emma with me to help take my mind off things, and family was there too.

“It was just easy to talk to these guys and Em and make sure I could get Headingley off my mind as quickly as possible.”

Messy split before Lyon, McCarthy reunites

The start of his romance with McCarthy marked the end of Lyon’s 10-year relationship with ex Melissa Waring, who said at the time she was ‘devastated’ seeing pictures of her partner with the blonde glamour.

Waring started a blog called The life of Lyon in 2018, where she detailed the traumatic aftermath of her breakup with the Test veteran, with whom she has two daughters.

“If someone had asked me about my life at the beginning of last year, my answer would have been quite simple. I was a 29-year-old woman, with two amazing little girls and an amazing partner that I loved and adored unceasingly for nine years,” Waring wrote.

“Over the past seven years we have traveled (sic) around the world. I have supported him and his dream of playing professional cricket for his country by raising our two beautiful children, at home, in hotel rooms and on tour Trying to make the most of our crazy amazing life as a family of four A year ago my life was perfect except I was about to find out , This was not the case.

“In December 2017, my world came crashing down around me. Life as I knew it was over and my soul mate was gone, leaving me and our daughters (aged three and four) to pick up the broken pieces and trying to find a way to move forward on their own.

“Overnight I became a single mother of two, overnight my world was rocked to its core and it changed forever.

“Until the very end I was 100% dedicated to our life and loved every part of him and our world. It was like a bomb, it went off from behind.

“I had to deal with it in a very public, humiliating and confrontational way. A part of me died.
