England leveled the series with a 118-point hammering against South Africa in a rainy One-Day Second International at Emirates Old Trafford.

Chasing 202 in a 29-to-1 clash, England unbelievably put South Africa down 6-4 in the first four overs of their response before eventually knocking them out for 83 – their lowest tally against England in ODI cricket.

Janneman Malan and series-opening centurion Rassie van der Dussen set off in the same Reece Topley (2-17) for the Ducks, while David Willey (1-9) picked up Quinton de Kock (5) and Jos Buttler missed Aiden Markram without facing in the next.

The England bowlers, aided by a remarkable run out from Jos Buttler, battle against South Africa with the visitors reduced to 6-4 in the fourth.

England’s main concern from this point on was the light rain which had returned to Manchester and the possibility of it forcing the players to leave before the 20 innings mark, which had to be reached to constitute a result.

Buttler turned to spin at both ends to shake up the overs and not only did they manage to do so, but Moeen Ali (2-22) picked up Henrich Klaasen (33) and Adil Rashid (3-29) crossed the lower order. .

Earlier, another pulverized innings from the hosts saw them knocked out short of their full overs allowance for a fifth consecutive time in ODI cricket this summer.

Dwaine Pretorius won career-best numbers of 4-36 including key wickets from Joe Root (1) and Jonny Bairstow (28) as England slipped to 101-6 after being inserted by opposition to the draw.

Phil Salt hit 17 in his first ODI of the summer – for retired Ben Stokes – before falling much the same way Jason Roy (14) did earlier, attempting to shoot down short midwicket.

Root played an unusually poor shot, a horrid hack across the line which he only managed to pass high and behind De Kock, while Bairstow was knocked down, battered by a slower delivery.

Moeen Ali (6) moved back and forth quickly, digging Keshav Maharaj’s (1-29) deep square leg, while Shamsi repped Buttler (19), caught short third man on a thick outside edge.

Liam Livingstone (38 of 26) and Sam Curran (35 of 18) somewhat saved the innings with some exhilarating cameos, but both perished in the middle of a border blitz.

Liam Livingstone went wild with the bat, reaching four limits in a row before being caught off guard.

Livingstone broke three sixes and a four of Anrich Nortje’s 21st opening four, before dropping to fifth, and Curran collected 14 of Tabraiz Shamsi’s 24th opening three deliveries to perish in fourth.

Willey (21) also made a six and out as Pretorius took his fourth while the tail limped until Rashid (12) was exhausted with a pigeon assist to see England knocked out for 201 with five balls to spare.

Adil Rashid was exhausted after his shot hit a pigeon as England were knocked out for a fifth straight ODI, dismissed by South Africa for 201.

South Africa never threatened that scoreline after losing four wickets in the first four overs of their chaotic response.

Curran clinched the fifth, beating David Miller (12) in the ninth, before the spinners got to work – Moeen taking the final wicket four balls beyond the 20 mark to see England earn a convincing win and equalizing the series.

“We thought we’d see him in abundance with the bat, but the way they played and defended a sub-par score is as good a day as he could have asked for.”

English captain of the white ball, Jos Buttler: “It’s great for us to get the win. I’m delighted with the way we came out with the ball, those first few wickets really put us on the right track.

“Guys keep trying to play the way we want as a team. Can we do better? Absolutely. But, again, having that mindset and that positivity has allowed us to achieve a score that now looks great.

“We know we can improve, but that will always be the message. We haven’t quite hit the bat all summer so far in white-ball cricket, but we know how well we will be dangerous when we do.”
