Lando Norris thinks Formula 1 could take a look back in a bid to improve the pedal cam, but has also made his own suggestion.
More than two decades after the last use of the pedal cam, the concept has made a comeback on the McLaren driven by Lando Norris at the British Grand Prix.
The positioning of the camera meant that it showed the movement of the pedals from below, while in its last appearance before this hiatus it was placed above the pedals to show the movement of Pedro de la Rosa’s feet in the Arrows car at 2000 Belgian Grand Prix.
After seeing these images, Norris accepted the suggestion that Formula 1 may be considering a return to this angle, as the current one doesn’t show much, especially given the lack of a clutch pedal.
However, he also thinks that there would be disadvantages if the camera returned to such a position.

“I think just because there’s no clutch pedal doesn’t mean it’s always going to look a bit more streamlined and straightforward,” Norris said, as quoted by Autosport.
“I think it’s a fact. Driving with the clutch and doing the heel and toe and stuff, I did that a lot at Ginetta in 2014.
“And you feel like there’s a lot more going on – and it’s really not an easy thing to do. But it’s also a lot of fun. Now it’s easier. You just have the brake and accelerator.
“I feel like it should be the other way around. What you can see now is like the pedals moving, because it’s slightly inclined.
“So you can see how much maybe one of them is pushed and so on. Some other way of course you would see the front, but then maybe you only see not so moving.
“But I know what you’re talking about, because I saw the old video that they kind of compared it to. And it looked more raw then than almost what it does now. But I think just a little like that.
“I mean, I’m sure there’s maybe a better position to be able to watch things.”
That being said, Norris explained that the lack of room in this area to put a camera is also problematic.
He therefore suggested that Formula 1 try to offer a more side view with the camera.
“There just isn’t a whole lot of room in there,” he continued.
“So it’s not easy to mount, and so on. But maybe if they put it a little further?
“So closer to the side you would be able to see things better – maybe you would see the trips even more. So maybe that’s something they’ll try.
