Malmö striker Jo Inge Berget is in talks with the Swedish champions over a new deal – amid links to a meeting with Jon Dahl Tomasson at Ewood Park.
Berget is one of three Malmo players Rovers have reportedly been interested in, although centre-back Anel Ahmedhodžić has since signed for Championship side Sheffield United in a deal worth up to £4million of pounds sterling.
Creative force Veljko Birmanevic could prove out of Rovers’ price bracket as European clubs hover around the 23-year-old, with striker Berget another on Tomasson’s radar, Swedish sources say.
Berget opened his account for the season, as well as registering an assist, as Malmö moved up to fourth in the Swedish top flight with victory over Varbergs BoIS FC at the weekend.
The 31-year-old has now scored 58 times for the club and added 52 assists, in 238 appearances, over two spells.
Berget recorded 26 goal contributions during Tomasson’s two seasons with Malmö in which they won back-to-back Allsvenskan titles and earned 20 caps for Norway.
With Tomasson keen to add more experience to his squad, Berget has been a name seen as interesting Rovers who have yet to add to their squad since the appointment of their Danish head coach.
Berget’s contract runs until the end of the calendar year, with the Swedish season continuing until November.
However, he is in talks with the club over a new deal, and where previously he was uncertain about his long-term future, he said over the weekend: “We are having a dialogue. It will take time, but it is happening and it is enjoyable.
“We’re a bit closer now than before and we’ll see how it goes in the end.”
Malmö will take part in Champions League qualifying tomorrow, facing Víkingur Reykjavík in the second leg of the first round, with the Swedes leading 3-2.
