Since its inception in 2013, the Fasig-Tipton July Sale of Selected Horses of All Ages has grown to include horses of racing age and now potential mares and broodmares with walking foals. The summer placement on the calendar gives owners and breeders the beneficial opportunity to upgrade their stock for upcoming racing competitions or trade in an investment before the fall.
“The sale has increased in number and quality of horses, we continue to see a need in the market for opportunities to sell horses, and this sale was a successful complement to the yearling sale which takes place the following day,” Fasig-said Tipton Chairman and CEO Boyd Browning. “I think the sale of yearlings helps attract buyers for the sale of horses of all ages and vice versa. The only thing we see in this world is immediacy and currency. Horses in their current form and with people willing to sell them create a great opportunity.”
This year, the expanding catalog features 217 class offerings, including current form racing candidates, full broodmares, broodmare candidates and stallion candidates. These horses will pass through the Newtown Paddocks from 3 p.m. on Monday, July 11.
“This sale gives people options and liquidity in the market. Being a service-oriented company, we serve the market,” Browning added. “It’s fun to see people getting excited about the sale, and we’re looking forward to a strong sale on Monday.”
The timing of the sales calendar creates a perfect opportunity for racehorse owners to sell and buy their programs. With the Prime Minister Of the sea and Saratoga the race meets around the corner, everyone has an eye for the winner’s circle.

“It’s a big sale on the calendar; there’s a shortage of racehorses across the country right now and a demand for horses at all levels,” said Mark Taylor of sales agency Taylor Made. . “There are some nice ship and victory bounties on the west coast that people will be eager to capitalize on.

“Who doesn’t want to have their picture taken at Saratoga Racetrack? We’ve sold a handful of horses over the past two years, bought by people specifically to have a picture taken at Saratoga,” Taylor said. “It’s a nice middle of the year where some of the bigger stables that maybe have a horse that doesn’t fit their criteria can be moved around and return the investment in the upcoming yearling sales. That’s a good chance for the market to turn.”
Bradley Weisbord and Liz Crow’s ELiTE Sales feature a 22-person project that enrolls in programs at both ends of the spectrum.
“We started with this sale in 2017; this sale has always meant a lot to us and is a big goal on our calendar every year,” Crow said. “We’re still trying to put together a good repechage that will allow buyers to have options at both ends. Some horses still have conditions, others can go straight to black-type events, and some get wins from black type.We sold Without fear out of this sale last year; he then won the Brooklyn Stakes (G2) on Belmont Day for his new owners, Repole Stable.”
4 year old child Payer filly Hybrid Eclipse proposed as Hip 533, made a timely update to its page, adding a black-type win in the July 2 Caesar’s Wish Stakes to laurel park.
“Hybrid Eclipse just won a 3 3/4 length bet for trainer Brittany Russell with a 4 1/2 Thoro-Graph – a lifetime best number,” Crow said. “Receiving an in-game win is totally positive for her.”
The 2021 edition of the sale has been split into two catalogues, the July Breeding Sale and the July Race Age Horse Selection. Combined, 123 horses were sold of the 156 offered for gross receipts of $7,917,500. This created an average price of $64,369 and a median of $40,000. Thirty-three horses did not reach their reserve, which represents an RNA level of 21.1%.
By Sunday evening, 55 horses had been withdrawn from sale.
“The makeup of the catalog changes from year to year depending on who wants to sell, versus a crop being brought to market,” Browning said. “Every year has its unique circumstances. We have great prospects this year and some interesting 2yos, some bought specifically as yearlings to be sold as 2yos, but not at a juvenile sale.

Browning said James Keogh’s Grovendale Sales will provide a full scatter for Dew Sweepers, which includes two 2-year-olds who recently raced for trainer Rusty Arnold at the Royal Ascot meet. Large Oak (Hip 521) finished 18th out of 21 in the Queen Mary Stakes (G2) and End of September (Hip 550) was the last of 17 in the Coventry Stakes (G2). The 2 year old filly Buttons by Swirling Candy (Hip 474), ran impressively at Indianapolis Horseshoebreaking his young daughter for Arnold when he first proposed on June 28.
He said the original intention of this partnership, Dew Sweepers, was to resell these horses at age 2 to the racetrack with recent starts or published work.
“It was a specific mindset and plan,” Browning said. “It features some interesting horses, four of which were originally purchased overseas and could potentially be serious turf horses here in the United States. It shows that people are always looking for and evaluating opportunities, whether you are a seller or a buyer. , which makes for an excellent trade.”
