Speaking on the eve of the game to Sydney Morning Herald, her mother Nill said: ‘Self-harm…I saw that and people told me. I asked him the question and he didn’t want to talk about it at the time.

“John (Morris, former Kyrgios manager) told me Andy was worried about Nick because he could see evidence of self-harm.

“And I blame others for that. For just pressuring him, criticizing him. Even the people we thought might support him.

“This period was very hard. I just wanted to be near him constantly so I could see him… And if I can’t see him, I worry so much about him that it becomes very difficult.

Nill is unable to travel due to health issues so she was back in Australia as her son took on Djokovic on center court.

But she said he’s in a good place now. “I love it,” Nill said. “He’s very nice and he loves. He tells me he loves me every day.

“When he was little, we were so close. Good to see him again. I’m happy for him. He is happy and enjoying life and appreciates every little thing. It’s a good feeling.
