Jean Prat Prize preview: Modern Games shows ‘all the signs’ for Charlie Appleby as he leads British challenge in Deauville

The British and Irish coaches have won the last three editions of the Prix Jean Prat and with raiders making up almost half of the 11 riders who will be competing in Deauville on Sunday, there is a good chance that the prize will cross the Channel again.

Charlie Appleby won seven-stadia Group One with Pinatubo in 2020 and builds on the winner of the Poule d’Essai des Poulains modern gameswho is going on a trip again after finishing third in the Prix du Jockey Club at Chantilly recently.

That form got a huge boost when Vadeni confirmed his French Derby success in the Coral-Eclipse and the Godolphin colt looks set to play a starring role on Sunday afternoon.

“He’s in great shape but obviously we’re back a mile and a quarter at seven furlongs,” said the Moulton Paddocks manager.

“He is very authentic and he has a lot of natural rhythm. I hope it will be a fast pitch, which you can never be sure of in Deauville, but he shows all the signs he was before the (French) Guineas. .”

by Richard Hannon Lusail nearly scoffed at the odds of 28/1 when he was beaten just a head in the St James’s Palace Stakes. Prior to that, he had been beaten by just over five lengths in the 2000 Guineas. Mehmas’ son therefore showed marked improvement to close that gap to the winner of both races, Coroebus, at Royal Ascot.

Colt is another to back up in distance, although Lusail has plenty of speed and seven furlongs should be little trouble.

by Sheila Lavery new energy finished eighth at St James’s Palace and is also being judged on a shorter trip.

New Energy was in contention a yard away from his home at Ascot, and having finished second to Native Trail in the Irish 2,000 Guineas before that, Lavery will be hoping the New Bay son can prove he belongs at Group 1 level in the north of France.

“Hopefully it’s not too close to Ascot. We’ve just run it around at home so until we meet it we won’t know, but it’s a really good one. traveler,” Lavery said.

“It took him a little while to get to Ascot, but hopefully he’s back to his old self and is down to seven for the last group of three we had to give it a shot.

“I think it will fit, he has such high cruising speed. Ascot was a confusing race and did he hold the steep mile? I’m not too sure or was it just the pace of the race. But I think he will do it against seven very well.”

The last runner making the trip is Aidan O’Brien Tenebrism. Many thought last season’s Cheveley Park winner would be back to sprinting after a sub-par effort in the 1,000 Guineas, but the Caravaggio filly vindicated her trainer’s decision to stick it to a mile in the finish a respectable fourth in the Coronation Stakes.

Poule d’Essai des Pouliches winner Mangosteen also took part in this burning renewal of the Coronation Stakes, won by Inspiral. However, the Mikel Delzangles-trained filly failed to follow her performance at ParisLongchamp and will look to recapture the form that saw her claim classic glory.

Andre Fabre is the race’s co-leading coach, having clinched Group One five times. The decorated manager relies on Tribalist this time around, who finished third in the Modern Games in the French 2000 Guineas before falling short by a short header in a Chantilly Group Three more recently.

Also bringing the classic French shape to the table is Texaswho shared the Godolphin pair of Modern Games and Tribalist in the capital in May, while Francis-Henri Graffard saddles the exciting Rozgar which makes the step to the Group One company in search of its fourth consecutive success.

The field is completed by the triple winner Siam Paragon and the filly Accakaba.
