Phew. BLENHEIM BOY – 1.45 York

Eilean Dubh won ITV’s first match, the John Smith’s Racing Handicap over a mile at York, but the one knocked out of the race for the future was Richard Fahey. BLENHEIM BOY. He bolted to Ripon in soft ground on his seasonal respawn, but then dipped below that level from his new mark on faster ground. That third of a quarter and three quarters was good proof that he could cope with a livelier field and an 89 rating, especially since he was lit at the start. It was a very nice run against his seniors getting the weight for age of 9lbs and worth adding to your My Stable tracker in the short to medium term. Churchill’s descendants are 5/14 in Doncaster and I would especially like to see him on Town Moor with some juice in the ground.

BERKSHIRE BREEZE – 2.25 Ascot

At Ascot, Bague D’Or continued their improvement by landing the Hi-Speed Services Handicap over 1m6f but the runner-up BERKSHIRE BREEZE looks like a very nice long-term stay project for Andrew Balding. He was lively early on but traveled all over his rivals entering the straight and it looked unclear how far Hayley Turner pushed him aside for his run. He responded well to pressure but pulled away from Bague D’Or and hung on a bit too, still running a bit on the green, before losing a header in a tight finish. It was his debut with a disability and he’s trained well against his elders, seeking every square inch for a prospect to stay smart, especially when he’s learning to settle down. A potential Melrose or Mallard handicap horse this season, the Chester Cup could be his type of long-term race.

JUMBY – 3.50 Newmarket

JUMBY is a very capable handicapper over six and seven furlongs and has traveled best in the bet365 Bunbury Cup over the latter distance under Christophe Soumillon. Running out of room approaching the commercial end of the race, he drifted from the side of the stands to the other side under the Belgian jockey and performed very well in the circumstances only to be beaten a little more a length and a quarter in a platoon. . Well proven at Ascot after finishing third at Wokingham at the Royal Meeting he is in the Moet & Chandon International Stakes at this track on King George Day and seven at Ascot could be just what he needs to win one of these large handicapped grounds.
