Gabriel Jesus scored 90 seconds into his first Arsenal outing as his brace helped the Gunners to a 5-3 victory against German Second Division side FC Nuremberg.
The Brazilian forward, who completed a £45m move from Manchester City earlier in this summer transfer window, entered Germany at half-time with the Gunners 2-0 – and made an immediate impact , scoring high into Ainsley Maitland’s net. -The Niles pass.
Mohammed Elneny then struck a stunning strike to equalize for Mikel Arteta’s side, before two Nurnburg own goals from Christpher Schindler and Tim Handwerker gave the Gunners a 4-2 advantage.
Jesus then finished off Gabriel Martinelli’s cross at the near post with 15 minutes left to add a fifth for Arsenal, just after Lukas Schleimer pulled one back for the German side.
Arteta named a strong starting line-up for this pre-season outing, with Emile Smith Rowe, Nicolas Pepe and Kieran Tierney among the starters – but their warm-up match fell to disaster.
Johannes Geis and Kwadwo Duah scored past new Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner in the space of five minutes in the first half to stun the Premier League side.
Arsenal are set to welcome back their international players – including Bukayo Saka, Aaron Ramsdale and Martin Odegaard – next week ahead of their United States tour.
Arteta: No problem with Tierney
In Arsenal’s victory in Germany, the left-back Tierney only lasted 30 minutes before being replaced by Cedric Soares.
The Scotland international missed the end of last season with a knee injury and it was feared he suffered another injury after the early substitution, but Arteta confirmed it was all part of the pre-prepared plan.
“He’s really good,” Arteta said. “He’s been training really well. Obviously he’s been out for over three months now, so we wanted to give him a good warm-up, play the first half hour and then get him out.
“So he was in good condition and there are no problems there.”
West Ham beat Swiss club Servette | N Forest lose to Coventry
David Moyes’ West Ham started their own pre-season campaign with a 2-0 victory against Swiss side Servette.
Moyes named a strong squad for the first friendly of the summer – with Kurt Zouma, Issa Diop, Michail Antonio and Said Benrahma getting some vital minutes.
The Hammers took the lead when Manuel Lanzini’s free-kick wreaked havoc at the back among the hosts, leaving youngster Ali Ajese heading home in an empty net with the goalkeeper nowhere to be found.
Moyes made six changes at the break and one of them – Divin Mabumba – added a second for the east Londoners after heading home on the rebound after Benrahma’s shot was saved on his way .
Servette caused the Hammers some problems and hit the woodwork twice – either side of half – but the Hammers took the win after scoring their second.
Meanwhile, newly-promoted Nottingham Forest lose their first pre-season game since becoming a Premier League club, with Coventry losing 3-1 to Spain.
The Championship club came from behind to win 3-1 thanks to goals from Matty Godden and a brace from Tyler Walker.
A slight bright spot for Steve Cooper was a debut goal for Guilian Biancone, the defender signing a three-year contract at the City Ground last week after joining Troyes.
