Friday: Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes, Newmarket

Rob Hornby and Frankie Dettori have handled recent reversals of fortune with aplomb and it became clear entering the final stage of the Falmouth Stakes that one of them was in for a much needed break.

He didn’t even fall in Hornby’s way as he grabbed it on Prosperous Voyage. After seeing Inspiral and Sandrine pass him two furlongs away, he kept his composure and rather than responding to their greater acceleration, trusted his filly’s stamina and crushed them. At the line, he had a length and three quarters lead.

While Dettori’s ‘sabbatical’ from the stable of John and Thady Gosden has grabbed headlines in recent weeks, Hornby’s banter with Irish Derby winner Westover was of equally high profile.

He was courteous as he watched Colin Keane pick up a victory he was almost certainly capable of, then found that Scope – who had by then given him his only Group 1 victory – had to be taken down after crashing. be fractured right cannon bone. and the pastern during exercise.

Here, his need was undoubtedly greater. Dettori’s legacy is already secure, but Hornby was doubling his total in Group 1. He described him as “bonkers”, while coach Ralph Beckett pointed out perhaps the greatest irony.

If Gosden’s tension with Dettori had been allowed to last a bit longer and 1-7 favorite Inspiral had another man on board, then Prosperous Voyage owners Marc Chan and Andrew Rosen would almost certainly have opted for their good friend Dettori rather than for Hornby.

Dettori was expected to ride the filly had she raced in Thursday’s Listed Sir Henry Cecil Stakes, but “it’s the break” as they say. It was certainly not lost on the rider.

“It’s crazy isn’t that how things can change,” he said. “I’m so happy for the filly and the whole team. It’s crazy, isn’t it? I’m in a very privileged position thanks to Ralph and the owners and relations, riding in these Group 1s is the place where all jockeys want to be and days like this make it all worth it.

“It’s a crazy sport we play, with its ups and downs. It was terribly sad to lose Scope, especially after the yard had such a great weekend with Westover.

“Nothing ever happened to me right away, I continued my apprenticeship under Mr. [Andrew] Balding and the academy there probably served me well for the ups and downs of what’s to come.

“You have to keep kicking and when given the chance, do your best and do it.”

Hornby was also touched by the reception he received.

“I’ve never had this before, even in France there was nobody there, so it was a strange return trip,” he added. “It’s something I’ve never experienced and they always have a grateful crowd here. I’m over the moon. Especially after the year we’ve had.

“We came down to the Guineas narrowly and you’re still thinking about what could have been and then what happened in the last three weeks. It’s crazy.”

Beckett also recognized the significance of the moment for his loyal rider.

“He gave her a nice walk,” he said. “He’s done it before, he’s done it on Scope last year in France and we don’t lack confidence in him. It’s just that we have three jockeys working regularly and if an owner wants a jockey different, that’s his prerogative, we all know that – that’s how it works.

“He’s become an integral part of our operation. Whether he rides all the horses or not, that’s not all. He’s a very laid-back character and nothing bothers him.

“When he was challenged he sat quietly, which suits this filly and she came well below him. He does that a bit [waits on one that gets passed], you will see it when our horses run very well. Sometimes it went well, sometimes it didn’t go so well, but he never panics.”
