Carlos Sainz Sr slams a penalty after huge Extreme E crash

Carlos Sainz Sr has slammed the penalty given to his opponent after being involved in a heavy crash during an Extreme E race.

Sainz Sr, father of Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz Jr, runs for Acciona | Sainz XE Team in the series and were competing in the Island X-Prix final in Sardinia when the accident happened.

He was leading the race at the time before being hit by Johan Kristoffersson of Rosberg X Racing and his car overturned following the impact.

Sainz was momentarily trapped in the car as it rested on its roof and the red flag was waved.

He was eventually able to leave the car before being taken to hospital while Kristoffersson received a 30-second penalty, demoting the Rosberg team from the winners’ spot to third place.

Sainz then took to Twitter to confirm he was fine, but also expressed his disappointment that Kristoffersson only received a 30 second penalty.

“Fortunately, all the medical examinations went well and I have just been released from the hospital, even though I am in a lot of pain,” said the 60-year-old. “I’m still really disappointed with what happened on the track and even more so that there was only a 30-second penalty for whoever caused this big accident.

“In over 40 years in motorsport, this is one of the most serious actions I have ever seen without an exemplary penalty. Thank you all very much for your messages of support.

Following the accident, Acciona | The Sainz XE team confirmed that Sainz remained conscious immediately after the heavy blow and was taken to hospital as a precaution.

“This afternoon, Carlos Sainz was hit by another card while leading the Island X-Priz I final in Sardinia,” a statement read.

“Following the impact, Acciona’s car | The Sainz XE team rolled over in a violent accident. Carlos was able to leave the car on his own and remained conscious. The driver was then taken to hospital for medical checks, as a precaution.

“The team will post updates on its status in due course.”
